That’s a lot of pimientos: the first 100 Hollow Olives.

When I started this, I didn’t know how many collages I wanted to make. I just wanted to make them. When I realized how close I was to 100, I thought “100?! And people are still paying attention?”

This site was inspired by The Go! Team album covers and the desire to get back to tactile cut-and-pasting, vs all the Photoshop work I was doing for Enormous Orange. It also helped that there was a local book sale every Saturday in an old industrial building. It was $1 for hardcovers, $0.50 for paperbacks. I stocked up on old science books, magazines, and travel books. (As a side note, when you see a selection of books from 15-20 years ago, you realize how big book stores really only stock new books or classics). Anyway, most of these were cut out while I watched TV, scanned in later, and assembled in Photoshop. Maybe counter to the original idea, but I didn’t trust my gluing skills.

Early on I realized the titles would be key. They either pay off or set up the image. I also challenged myself to try and give the visuals a sense of motion or movement, because they were by nature a static image. I wanted them to feel more like a frame of a movie than a static image. A strange movie, maybe.

Here are some observations and favorites from the first 100:

I’ve always liked this one, mostly for the colors, but it’s also a bit of physical comedy.
Lookout!

This, to me, is the perfect setting for a sci-fi adventure story.
The Discovery Of The Diode City.

An early one, but still one of my favorites. Not sure what she’s victorious over, but I’m rooting for her.
21st Century Nike.

Sometimes I got the depth of field just right.
How Are We Going To Eat All These Bananas?

I added few graphic elements here and there. I designed this to be like desktop wallpaper.
Look, Another Parade Where They Don’t Throw Candy.

At an old book sale I found a series of books on collectables. What do you do when you have a bunch of typewriters and chairs? Turn it into a set of characters.
The Rag Time Gossip Club.

I’ve always liked these titles. They’re interesting ideas to me. Not sure if the visuals quite lived up to the idea:
Space Stations Are Graceful Swimmers.
Motel Hotel Do Tell But Don’t Sell.

And I liked these visuals. Not sure if the titles paid them off enough.
Spaceberries.
I Love What You’ve Done With The Living Room.

And when you can’t figure out what to do, sometimes it just helps to start with a white background and throw everything at it.
Space Dream.

Thanks for following along on my collage adventures.
